"Wait, you used to do THAT manually?"
I've been building software for 19 years. Something that would take me 2 months now takes 1 week.
I’ve been building software for 19 years. Something that would take me 2 months now takes 1 week.
Here’s my prediction of what our kids will find absurd:
—
- We used to write code line by line.
Every function. Every loop. Every variable name. Typed by hand.
Today, I describe what I want and Claude Code writes it. My kids will think “typing code” is like writing with a quill.
—
- We used to draw digital art stroke by stroke.
Illustrators spent weeks on a single campaign visual. Layers, masks, color correction - all manual.
Now a single prompt generates what used to take a design team days.
—
- We used to spend millions producing a 30-second video ad.
Scriptwriters. Directors. Crew of 50. Weeks of post-production.
AI video generation is turning this into a weekend project for a solo founder.
—
- We used to spend half a day in a studio for one commercial photo.
Lighting rigs. Wardrobe changes. 500 shots for 3 usable images.
AI-generated product photography now takes minutes. Not hours. Not days.
—
- We used to read 10 reports page by page to find insights.
Analysts would spend days combing through PDFs, spreadsheets, and slide decks.
Now you upload them all and ask: “What are the 3 biggest risks?”
—
- We used to click 100 blue links to do market research.
Open tab after tab. Copy-paste into spreadsheets. Summarize manually.
AI agents now crawl, extract, and synthesize research in minutes.
—
- We used to wait 2 weeks for a website redesign.
Wireframes. Mockups. 3 rounds of revisions. Developer handoff.
Now a solo founder can rebuild a landing page in one afternoon with AI.
—
- We used to spend a full day building a presentation deck slide by slide.
Pick a template. Align text boxes. Source stock photos. Redo the layout 3 times.
AI now generates a full deck from a one-page brief.
—
- We used to hire entire teams to answer the same customer questions on repeat.
Ticket queues. Canned replies. 24-hour response times.
AI agents now resolve repetitive support queries instantly, 24/7.
—
The pattern is clear.
Everything we do manually today, our children will do with a prompt.
The skill that matters now is not execution. It is knowing what to ask for, why, and when.
The next generation won’t be impressed by how fast you type. They’ll be impressed by how well you think.

I caught Cursor trying to be lazy.
The AI agent couldn’t solve the typing error, so it cast the variable to 'any' to suppress the error, just like a sloppy software engineer would.
