If you're still thinking GenAI is just for techies, think again.

A new paper from ChatGPT, based on usage trends from over 18 billion weekly messages, shows how it’s becoming indispensable for everyday problem-solving, from hobbies to critical decision support.
Here are 5 highlights, plus my takeaways:
1️⃣ Explosive adoption
By July 2025, ChatGPT reached ~700M weekly active users (10% of the world’s adult population), exchanging 2.5B messages per day.
Takeaway: This is one of the fastest technology adoptions in history, reminding us how quickly AI is becoming a daily utility. This is definitely not hype like the metaverse.
2️⃣ Shift to personal use
Non-work messages grew from 53% (June 2024) to 73% (June 2025). While work remains important, ChatGPT’s role in daily life, hobbies, and learning is growing even faster.
Takeaway: This confirms GenAI is a bottom-up technology in terms of adoption. It aligns with other reports that show corporations are lagging behind individual adoption.
3️⃣ Top use cases
Nearly 80% of conversations fall into three buckets: Practical Guidance, Seeking Information, and Writing. Writing dominates workplace tasks, especially editing and summarizing text.
Takeaway: This aligns with views that users are increasingly shifting to GenAI for information. Unsurprisingly, writing dominates workplace tasks, as it is the great equalizer across professions.
4️⃣ Coding & companionship are smaller than expected
Despite media narratives, only 4.2% of queries are about programming, and less than 2.5% relate to relationships, role-play, or emotional support.
Takeaway: I could be biased. I believe programming usage of GenAI is higher, but most of us use Claude or Gemini for coding. AI personal companionship seems to be more hype than reality.
5️⃣ Demographics are shifting
The early gender gap (80% male in late 2022) has closed, with female users slightly outnumbering male users by mid-2025. Adoption has also grown disproportionately faster in low- and middle-income countries.
Takeaway: AI adoption is democratizing, showing that the benefits of generative AI are spreading well beyond early male-dominant tech users.
How are you using ChatGPT or other GenAI tools daily? Does the report align with your own experiences?
