“The way young people are using AI is disappointing.”

That’s the headline from a Google DeepMind research scientist in this Times of India article.

And it struck my nerve.

Yes, education needs to be redesigned for the AI era.

But let’s be honest: we can’t push all the burden onto teachers and schools.

Right now, AI is like giving every student a super-smart tutor.

But here’s the problem:

There are 2 types of tutors:

  1. The bad ones spoon-feed the answers.

  2. The good ones guide your thinking.

AI, in the hands of young students, is becoming the bad tutor now.

It gives answers without teaching thought.

It shortcuts effort without building skill.

This makes me think:

Should AI tools have age ratings, just like apps, movies and games?

Should we train a different model just for kids, one that refuses to give easy answers and instead prompts curiosity and learning?

Let’s stop blaming kids for using the tools we gave them. Let’s build better tools, and set better boundaries.

What do you think: Should AI tools have age ratings?
