Every parent with primary kids will experience this stress every week.
It is an evening ritual like this:
It is an evening ritual like this:
- We read “apple”, “banana”, “cherry”, …
- Watch our kids write it.
- Get stressed when they make some mistake.
- And this repeats every other day.
Yup, I am talking about reading words to help our kids practice spelling.
Every time my wife or I do this, I always wonder if this is time well spent. And is this good for learning when our stress spills over to the kids?
Over time, some parents learn to be smarter by recording their voice on WhatsApp, and asking their kids to play from there. But it is still messy, and hard to do revision.
So, I decided to build Spell Parrot. It is not another Spelling App. I built it because I can’t find the solution on the market.
It is a simple but practical app that allows me to just:
- Take a snapshot of my kid’s school spelling list.
- They can practice with the app reading for them without us.
- Come to us for assessment when they are confident.
This gives them more space and less stress in learning, which leads to better memory retention. It could cultivate independent learning - something I believe in.
While simple, this app is special to us:
- It is the first app that I built for my kids.
- It is the app that our family uses every day now.
- It is the app that led to my thought of combining entrepreneurship and parenting.
- It is the app that led to the founding of Learn Parrot.
Today, I just decided to officially introduce it here. If you are a parent and this resonates, download and give it a try. Feel free to connect and ping me for any feedback.
Fun fact: Why Spell Parrot, and why a purple parrot mascot? My kids have a favorite purple parrot soft toy. It came to my mind when I was thinking about the name. And using their favorite toys as mascot makes them excited about the app too.
